Brief description

The Academic Masters of the Graduate Program in Biotechnology (PPGBIOTEC) of UTFPR, Campus Dois Vizinhos and Ponta Grossa is recognized with level 4 in the evaluation by CAPES – Coordination of Enhancement of Higher Education Staff.

PPGBIOTEC aims at forming human resources with high scientific and technological qualified mastery in the field of Biotechnology, to meet the demands of the professional and academic market in national, state and regional level. In this context, this program also aims at enabling the performance of research, teaching and development activities for technological innovation that may result in biotechnological goods and services for the society, assuring the mitigation of the impacting effects on the environment.

In CAPES, PPGBIOTEC was evaluated in the field of Biotechnology. CAPES created such an area in 2008 intending to stimulate the technological development and transfer the generated knowledge, contributing to the enhancement of the competition in the country and the generation of products and processes of innovation in the fields related to the environment, health, industry, agriculture and cattle raising. It is a multidisciplinary field, which creates opportunities for the professional to act both in the scientific and technological careers.


Research Lines

Natural Biomolecules
In this line of research, students develop projects that aim at the molecular synthesis and characterization and molecular identification of microorganisms. Such natural resources, bio-prospected in this way, may be applied to various processes, both to the other lines of research proposed for PPGBIOTEC and to similar areas. Hence, it enables the acquisition of new bioproducts of added values and biota knowledge of certain regions, thus resulting in new perspective for the technological development.

Industrial Bioprocesses
Through techniques of industrial microbiology, the studies are focused on the development of fermentative processes for the acquisition of bioproducts synthetized/accumulated by microorganisms such as bacteria, yeast, and fungi, besides enzymes. The usage of substrates arising from renewable sources as source of essential macro and micronutrients for the microorganism metabolism. This causes the generated bioproduct to acquire, besides the added value, an important function in the reduction of environmental impacts. In this line, we develop bioprocesses at different levels, from stirred flasks to board bioreactors, pilot and industrial scale.

Applied Biotechnology to Agriculture, Livestock and Agroindustry
This line of research develops processes for the appreciation of products, raw materials, and agricultural and livestock waste, using tools of molecular biology, fermentative processes, and microbial and enzymatic biotransformations, among others. For example, the processes of production, extraction, purification, characterization, and application of interest biomolecules to the agricultural and livestock activity. In this line, we develop projects concerning the selection of microbial lineage; biotransformation of raw materials in high added-value products: bioactive and nutraceutical compounds; mycotoxines; development of materials in different scales (macro or nano) for the controlled liberation of moecules, adsorption or removal of contaminants, among others.
